Day #2: 2 July 2013

Today was our first field trip. Our first stop was Knossos. It is the archaeological site if the Minian ruins of a palace right in a suburb of Heraklion. The area was really interesting because it is still an active archaeological site. I really loved walking around and looking down into the excavated part to see what the building structures look liked during this time. Even seeing just the size of the palace was astonishing because it is interesting to imagine that this structure and that these stones we are walking on have been here since 2,000 BC. Even in the museums, where all of the pottery, jewelry and mosaics were kept, it was astonishing to see the detail put in all of the artistry.

We also went to the Historical Museum of Crete. Here, we were able to see the different momentous from history that has occurred on Crete. I did not realize that the city is essentially "reinforced" from any battles that may occur. I also did not realize the influence of WWII on Crete; especially with the first parachute invasion in Chania.

Lion's Square

We also explored downtown Heraklion and saw the Lion's Square and the influence of the sea on people's lives with fresh fish and influencing their lifestyle. This was interesting just to see the local Cretans enjoying sitting outside and just people watching. We also saw places where we could get our nails done and lots of fun places to shop and explore!
