Day #1: 1 July 2013

Today was our first day of classes. I have to admit it that it was a bit of a reality check that I am actually here to study and not just play around all day in the ocean and pool. These past two days have been amazing between adjusting to the lifestyle, the food and just relaxing. Crete is literally paradise with the tropical plants, gorgeous weather, bright sunshine and plenty of beach time.

Class today was interesting between learning about the history of Greece and the language. Greece's history is so interesting because even though the country has been around since the early BCs, it was not officially recognized as a country until the late twentieth century. Even then, Greece was under various strains from the economy and the type of rule.

The Greek language seems confusing to me. I have never had to learn a language in another alphabet so it takes me awhile to understand even how to pronounce the word. I am used to Spanish and French where the letters are the same as in English and most pronunciation is based on phonetics. However, Greek is different in that we need to know the alphabet and then further learn what the words mean.

I can't wait for what this trip will bring and all of the adventures that we will have!
